Psychotherapist in Galway

About Paul Adams

Hello,

I am Paul Adams, a fully qualified Gestalt psychotherapist in Galway and accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP), a Certified Associate member of the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP) and member of the Board of the International Association for the Advancement of Gestalt Therapy (IAAGT). I am also Co-Chair of the Organisation Development committee of that organisation.

I hold a Post Graduate Diploma in Gestalt Psychotherapy from Institute of Technology Carlow (ITC) and completed my programme of studies through the Gestalt Institute of Ireland. I also hold a Professional Certificate in Couples Counselling and attend regular supervision in line with professional standards and practice under a strict code of ethics of these member organisations. I also attend regular workshops and training to further my personal and professional development.

The core philosophy behind my approach to counselling is rooted in my training in Gestalt therapy. It focuses on increasing a person’s awareness, freedom and self- direction and focuses on the present moment, rather than past experiences. At the centre of Gestalt therapy, is the holistic view that we are intricately linked to and influenced by our environments and that we all strive toward growth and balance.

In my therapeutical practice, individuals and couples can develop new perspectives and bring positive change into their lives because Gestalt therapy promotes increased self-awareness and a clear understanding of thoughts, emotions and feelings. I have extensive experience working with both individuals and couples on a wide range of issues from relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, anxiety, stress, panic attacks, depression and loss and grief. From a workplace perspective the most common issues include stress, burnout, relationships and bullying. For couples, Gestalt therapy helps build a stronger and more fulfilling relationship by increasing awareness, communication skills, and emotional connection.

My role as Chairperson of a National School in Galway has provided invaluable insight into understanding the challenges experienced by all the members of our school communities, children, parents and teachers. At the core of my practice is the belief that the quality of our working relationship greatly influences how much you can ‘get out’ of therapy. Clients have made enormous strides in their life and my hope is to be able to do that with you.
